Radio Eyes Twitter Application for iTunes at National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention This Week
Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) April 23, 2009 -- The latest twist on the Twitter phenomenon is a unique radio application introduced at this week's National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention by venerable radio equipment manufacturer Broadcast Electronics, Inc. (BE) enabling broadcasters to send "tweets" to iPod Touch and cell phone devices.
A live demonstration of the application at BE booth N7917 in Las Vegas involved not only tweeting song information, but also iTunes tags sent to the Twitter.com micro blog to be received by any Twitter enabled mobile or PC device. The NAB demo is followed online at Twitter NAB Radio (http://www.twitter.com/wnab). "This is big. It essentially means that song tagging is no longer limited to the desktop or an expensive receiver. Any iPhone, iPod Touch, PC or Mac can not only tag music, but purchase it on the spot," said Ray Miklius, Vice President of Studio Systems for Broadcast Electronics, a leading radio equipment manufacturer on the forefront of digital radio technology.
Until now, tagging songs played over the air for purchase later through Apple's iTunes had been the exclusive function of radio receivers incorporating HD Radio™ technology, he said. The demonstration showcased BE's new Twitter plug-in application for its The Radio Experience (TRE) data management system, which is used in radio studios to generate and schedule text for readout on text-enabled radios and websites. With this new application, radio stations are able to bring song selection and acquisition to mobile platforms using the micro-blog social network.
BE was instrumental in the introduction of iTunes Tagging to the broadcast community two years ago at the NAB convention in Las Vegas, the broadcast industry's largest annual trade show. Now, its new Twitter application, which is part of BE's Web 2.0 data initiative, brings radio to the social networking community. Last month, Twitter user numbers reached more than eight million, and is growing an average of 2000 a day. Also this week, actor Ashton Kutcher announced that he had out-Twittered CNN in a friendly competition of who could generate the most followers, the media powerhouse or the actor.
Web 2.0 is a term often used to describe the movement of the World Wide Web away from static webpages to more dynamic, sharable content and communities.
BE's TRE is a suite of software and hardware for creating, scheduling and formatting text messages for distribution on RDS, HD Radio or Web tuners. It is being used to interleave weather, sports and station ID text with song title and artist information as well as for advanced data applications such as digital mapping of navigational systems.
